The Model Rag

Back in the day before the Internet, email and eBay (yes, yes, there WAS such a time), news about the model horse hobby traveled by snail mail. Since most of the major publications were based on the East Coast or in the Midwest, those of us on the West Coast didn't receive our issues until several days later than other timezones. We often missed out on sales items or photo show dates.

Heather Wells, Laurie Jo Jensen and I, Kay (Fowler) Myers, decided to start our own magazine. It followed after our decidely offbeat senses of humor, with silly content like original cartoon series (Fred Horse), "From the Desk of Madeline" and "Laurie's Drivel Column", which invited readers to send in items for Laurie to discuss (and me to add editorial comments). It also had more regular columns for sales, shows, etc. Heather was fabulous in getting the scoop on new releases/discontinued items from all the companies and dealers, and often snagged full color promo materials to use as the back cover.

We called The Rag, "The serious model horse magazine that doesn't take itself too seriously." Our renewal notices were big sticky notes that read, "Renew Or Else!"
